Shape Up Herts Weight Management Programme

The Shape Up weight project is commissioned by Public Health Herts. The program focuses on combatting the growing problem of obesity amongst middle aged men in our county.

In Hertfordshire the numbers are equally troubling with 67% of adult males currently overweight or obese. Aside from the huge (and growing) cost to the NHS, the personal consequences associated with this are significant.Several medical issues are associated with Obesity including:

 Possible obesity related diseases:

  • Osteoarthritis

  • Diabetes

  • Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease

  • Gall bladder disease

  • Hypertension (High blood pressure)

  • Heart disease

  • Cancer

Not to mention social implication to obese individuals:

  • Low self esteem

  • Bullying

  • Possible reduction in productivity and job prospects

  • Family implications

This is why the Shape Up programme is being delivered to areas across Hertfordshire. It is designed as a programme that educates the public to develop a healthy relationship with food and change unhealthy behaviours and habits that cause weight gain. The programme engages men in a fun and effective way and uses group exercise and sport to improve fitness and support weight loss.
